A study published in BJU International examined the cost-effectiveness of intraoperative margin assessment during radical prostatectomy. Medip Analytics contributed to the simulation modelling.

Comparing surgical strategies

The analysis compared strategies involving NeuroSAFE, confocal laser microscopy and approaches without intraoperative margin assessment. It considered costs and patient health outcomes associated with nerve-sparing surgery and surgical margins.

The model found the evaluated margin-assessment strategies cost-effective compared with the strategies without them under the study's assumptions. Patient volume and available capacity affected the assessment.

Why context matters

A procedure's value depends on how it is delivered. Modelling helps explore those conditions, alongside the clinical evidence, rather than treating one result as applicable to every setting.
